General Drynov Nikolai Marchenko Thanks for telling us about the problem. Ivan Chonkin and his neighbor Gladischev are ridiculous people who dream about even more ridiculous things based entirely on their inability to participate in normal human conversations. The book ends with the joke on Gladyshev, whose misunderstanding of evolution that monkeys became man through labor and intelligence has been thoroughly dissettled by Chonkin’s question why horses do not become men if they work harder than men do, finds a note attached to the bottom of a hoof of his dead horse which had earlier disappeared.
It is a pleasant read, a reunion with old friends, but little more. My only qualm with the book is the inconsistency of Chonkin’s stupidity.
Having received no letters from Chonkin, she decides to write them herself, creating an airman whose fearlessness in battle gets him promoted to colonel and eventually shot down and killed. What I had on my mind throughout was uvan realization that few today understand the scourge of this system of government.
